The National Rainbow Coalition – NARC

The National Rainbow Coalition (NARC) was a coalition of Kenyan political parties in power from 2002 and 2005.

In preparation of the 2002 elections, the National Alliance of Rainbow Coalition (NARC) was formed. On December 27, 2002, NARC won a landslide victory over KANU. NARC presidential candidate Mwai Kibaki got 62% of the votes in the presidential elections, against only 31% for the KANU candidate, Uhuru Kenyatta. On December 30, 2002, Mwai Kibaki was sworn in as the third President of Kenya.

Why NARC?

In late 2002, several opposition parties and a group of KANU defectors (the Liberal Democratic Party) united to form NARC. Their primary goal was to prevent President Daniel arap Moi’s hand-picked successor, Uhuru Kenyatta, from taking power.

The Landslide Victory: In the December 2002 elections, NARC won a historic landslide. Mwai Kibaki secured roughly 62% of the vote, becoming Kenya’s third president and marking the first peaceful transfer of power from a ruling party to the opposition.

The “Kibaki Tosha” Moment: The coalition gained massive momentum when Raila Odinga declared “Kibaki Tosha!” (Kibaki is the one!), endorsing Mwai Kibaki as the joint opposition candidate.
