About Us

The National Rainbow Coalition (NARC) was a landmark political alliance in Kenya that fundamentally reshaped the country’s democratic landscape. Formed in 2002, it is best known for ending the 39-year rule of the Kenya African National Union (KANU)

Key Founders and Leaders

NARC was often described as a “coalition of coalitions,” bringing together the country’s most powerful political figures at the time:

  • Mwai Kibaki: The presidential candidate (Democratic Party).

  • Raila Odinga: Leader of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP).
  • Michael Kijana Wamalwa: Leader of FORD-Kenya (became Vice President).

  • Charity Ngilu: Leader of the National Party of Kenya (NPK).

Early Achievements

The NARC government is fondly remembered for several transformative policies in its early years:

  • Free Primary Education (FPE): Introduced in 2003, this brought millions of children back to school and remains one of the coalition’s most lasting legacies.

  • Economic Revival: After years of stagnation, Kenya’s economy began to grow rapidly, and tax collection was significantly improved.

  • Democratic Space: There was a marked increase in freedom of the press and freedom of speech compared to the Moi era.

The Party is run under strict compliance with the Kenyan Laws and Party Constitution (Preview a Copy of the Constitution)
